Carbon Reduction Plan

Climate change continues to be the single biggest threat to our planet with human activity being the main contributing factor.  Therefore, it is crucial that everyone plays their part in making positive changes to tackle this worldwide emergency.

We have adopted a strategic approach to improving our environmental performance, some of these strategies include:

  • Complying with present and future statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Increased leadership involvement and employee engagement
  • Enhanced company reputation and stakeholder confidence
  • Achieving our business objectives whilst incorporating environmental issues into our management practices
  • Reduction in energy usage, waste and business travel

Additionally, our focus on environmental performance has provided us with a competitive and financial advantage, achieved by improving efficiencies, reducing costs and integrating suppliers into our environmental initiatives.

We undergo an annual assessment by the worldwide sustainability platform, Ecovadis. We are proud to say, that through ongoing improvements and initiatives, we have progressed from Bronze status and advanced to Silver in recognition of our achievements. We are now working towards attaining Gold, through further improvements and changes to our business methods and operations.

John Pye’s Sustainability Goals

Our aim is to proactively reduce our carbon footprint not only from operations across all our sites, but also across our supply-chain. Our goal is to reach Net Zero emissions by 2040, an ambitious target 10 years ahead of the 2050 set by the UK Government in the Climate Change Act.

John Pye’s Actions on Sustainability

In working towards our goals we have developed a business wide Carbon Reduction Plan. This plan is constantly evolving but with the goal fixed at achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040 or earlier, if possible.

We have invested in green technologies with a wind turbine at our site in Port Talbot, Wales. Projections indicate an annual generation of 2,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy, poised to effectively cover up to 70% of the daily electrical operational requirements of the expansive 14-acre site in South Wales. Notably, any surplus power harnessed by the wind turbine will flow back into the National Grid.

To further support clean energy production, we have solar panel installations planned at multiple sites and are currently going through infrastructure planning to ensure the optimal solutions are implemented for each site, including structural reports, electrical and heating system upgrades.

In 2015 we produced a site-by-site schedule to upgrade our existing florescent lighting to LED together with the installation of automatic light sensors in offices and rooms used less frequently.  We are continuing to replace outdated heating sources with more energy efficient gel heaters and air conditioning units.

We are continuing with our programme to replace older vehicles with environmentally friendly options, increasing the number of hybrid and ULEZ compliant vehicles across our entire fleet.

By taking these initiatives we have been able to significantly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

Monitoring our Progress

In addition to the Silver status awarded by business sustainability ratings organisation, Ecovadis, we constantly monitor, track and evaluate our ongoing progress.

Since April 2022 we have collated our energy usage at each site to monitor the overall usage and trends, this has enabled us to set foundations for the continuous monitoring throughout 2023 and beyond. We are a growing business with new locations being introduced year on year most of which are old and often derelict buildings requiring substantial restoration works.

Our carbon reduction progress will continue to be monitored by our SHEQ department and is overseen by our SHEQ Audit and Compliance Manager, who reports our progress to the board of Directors regularly throughout the year. To support us with the data gathering and reporting of such initiatives, we have introduced an ESO Co-ordinator and Environmental Champions across our sites.

By increasing our day-to-day efficiency, reducing waste generated across our sites, minimising our energy consumption including using green technologies, and, most importantly, changing our existing practices, we will continue to reduce our carbon footprint.  The board of Directors are fully committed to investing time, resources, and finances to ensure we achieve this aim.

This CRP aims to demonstrate how the business will deliver on our commitment.  Our plan builds on our BS EN ISO 14001 Environmental Management System which has enabled us to create robust management processes and procedures and an overarching strategy for minimising our environmental impacts, working with our supply chain to help clients decarbonise their estates.

We will continue to build on our programme of measures to reduce our energy consumption and carbon emissions.
