Environmental Management System

Environmental Management System

We have implemented an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS). This is a globally recognised standard that assists organisations in improving their environmental performance by utilising resources more efficiently and reducing waste, leading to a competitive advantage and increased corporate social responsibility.

Our EMS requires us to take into account all relevant environmental issues that are pertinent to our operations, such as air pollution, water and sewage management, waste management, soil contamination, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and resource use and efficiency. ISO 14001 also mandates the need for continual improvement and a proactive approach to environmental concerns. Consequently, we have focused on several key areas, such as recycling and waste stream management, efficient energy use and investment in LED lighting technology, trade effluent discharges, and the environmental performance of our suppliers.

We have onsite facilities to collect, segregate and bundle all suitable waste and work with reputable waste management companies to ensure that our waste is sent for recycling or disposed of safely and in compliance with environmental regulations.

Our commitment to responsible waste management is part of our broader effort to promote sustainability and reduce our carbon footprint. Whilst vendors look to reduce their reliance on plastic and polystyrene in their supply chain, it still forms a lot of the packaging we see come into our sites. We deal with this onsite with our recycling facilities ensuring the absolute minimum goes to landfill.

At John Pye, we recognise the importance of responsible waste management and are committed to reducing our environmental impact. To achieve this goal, we have implemented a comprehensive recycling program across all our sites. We ensure that plastic, polystyrene, cardboard and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) waste are appropriately recycled.

Avoiding Landfill

Ultimately, our goal is to reduce or completely avoid the need for goods to be recycled or sent to landfill. Within our technology department we have a team of skilled engineers and fully equipped workshop enabling us to test and refurbish most electrical products, such as TVs, Desktop and Laptop Computers, Smartphones, Cameras, Audio and Electrical Beauty, prolonging the life of these products.

We are also an Environment Agency T11 exemption registered facility with a spare parts harvesting policy in place to ensure we maximise value from functional spare parts removed from products otherwise deemed as damaged beyond economic repair, reducing the amount of WEEE disposal and further reducing the contribution to landfill.

Environmental Strategy

There are many reasons why we have adopted a strategic approach to improving our environmental performance. These include complying with present and future statutory and regulatory requirements, increasing leadership involvement and employee engagement, improving our company’s reputation and stakeholder confidence through strategic communication, and achieving our strategic business objectives by incorporating environmental issues into our management practices. Additionally, our focus on environmental performance has provided us with a competitive and financial advantage by enhancing efficiencies and reducing costs, and by integrating suppliers into our business systems, we have encouraged better environmental performance.

Given our role in managing surplus stock and assets for significant clients into secondary market use, this enables us to reduce waste disposal by selling items for extended life use or for spares and repairs refurbishment use.
