Former mortuary sells for more than double its guide price
In an unexpected twist, a former mortuary, complete with its original embalming room, has sold for £137,000, more than double its guide price of £55,000 at a John Pye Auctions event in Leek, Staffordshire.
Despite its dilapidated state, the property, last used 20 years ago, drew considerable interest. Some potential buyers even expressed plans to turn it into a “spooky themed Airbnb.” The mystery buyer, who paid £82,000 over the expected amount, has not disclosed their intentions for the building and surrounding half-acre land.
Auctioneer Helen Bingley highlighted the potential of the property, citing a market for historical buildings for overnight stays. The mortuary’s location, just a mile from Cheddleton Village and 10 miles from Stoke-on-Trent, adds commuter appeal.
